Funny (or really sad depending on your perspective) you should mention the Ping of Death as it recently became clear that Microsoft made a similair mistake when they rewrote the TCP/IP-stack which they introduced with Vista.

So after all these years, a Ping of Death is possible again. So blocking ICMP requests might actually have a legitimate reason right now.

Here is the fix:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms11-064

However there is currently no widely know exploit code, so it probably isn't actively being abused right now.

Although it might be a reason for some hosting providers to block certain packets.

Actually to me it seems to me dig +trace @8.8.8.8 www.example.com will use 8.8.8.8 to get the list of root nameservers.

While normally it would the addresses specified in use resolv.conf to get the list of the root nameservers.

I don't think what DJB is proposing would cause any problems with a resolver's determination of whether a given string is an IPv4 address or a domain name--unless you giving your local hosts three-octet names. "pop.3" is clearly a domain name (since it has an all-alpha label) so it won't cause any confusion.

How would you comment on http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/dot-local.html in combination with the discussion that an IPv4 address is a syntactically legal domain name?

Erratum from Episode 11: No, in fact forwarding isn't mentioned in RFC 1034 or even 1035. (Jaap Akkerhuis was the first to contact us to remind us of that fact--thanks, Jaap.)

Amazing. I've just discovered the feed and am an avid listener now. Watch out NPR. Whatever happened to the written archives? I've been looking to see if my current problem has already been solved. Claudine.
